Bamboo Massage

Bamboo Massage has a long history in China, Indonesia and Japan where the bamboo plant is revered for its longevity and life energy but is still a relative novelty in the massage world. Bamboo is a giant grass the stalk of which can be cut, leaving its root system which will rapidly regenerate, making it a highly renewable resource.

Bamboo Massage uses hollow, organically-treated bamboo stalks of varying lengths and diameters to reach deeply and firmly into the body’s tissues. The bamboo is rolled over the body using the same strokes that a therapist would normally perform with just their hands, wrists and arms. The longer sticks are used for gliding strokes, whereas smaller tools can be used for more detailed work. This intense kneading of the muscles assists in the release of tension and easing of knots.

Hot & Cold Stone Massage

Hot and Cold Stone Massage is deeply relaxing with powerful healing capabilities as proven by its use by many diverse cultures over centuries. The warm stones are placed in strategic locations along meridian lines to release energy blocks. When used to massage the body the penetrating heat brings about a totally tranquil state. Alternating with the cold marble stones stimulates the body to take in more oxygen and nutrients, so it is great for detoxification. It is also wonderful for working at a deeper level into muscles that are especially tight or sore.

Bali’s famous Mount Agung is considered by the Balinese people to be the “Mother Mountain”. They believe she balances and grounds their lives to bring harmony. The basalt stones used in this massage course come from the rivers and streams surrounding Mount Agung.

Ayurveda Head Massage

Learn authentic Indian Ayurveda Head Massage at one of Bali’s premier holistic training centres.

India’s 4,000-year-old ayurveda medicinal system recognizes that a head massage using aromatic oils combined with an upper body massage will induce a state of peace and calm. It helps to relieve stress, reduce tension and improve flexibility in the shoulders, neck and arms. It boosts circulation, which can in turn help to reduce hair loss, premature balding and greying, and relieves scalp conditions.

The popularity of this modality is increasing, particularly as it can be completed while seated and fully clothed in any location.

Lomi Lomi Massage has been described as a nurturing, slow-flow wave with its hypnotic use of the hand, arm and elbow for the release of tension. An intense modality with the mental attitude being just as important as mastering the sequencing, Lomi Lomi Massage is very much rooted in Hawaii’s aloha mentality as spirituality and balanced emotions affect the outcome of this bodywork. Postnatal Massage

Postnatal Massage uses a Balinese herbal wrap applied to the mid-body section to speed up return to a pre-maternity figure. After giving birth women’s bodies are still undergoing tremendous adjustments physically and emotionally, so increasingly they look for therapists trained in post-partum massage techniques. As so many mothers today have to return to their careers soon after birth, it is a valuable asset to be able to offer these specialist maternity services.

In addition to helping restore the body to its pre-pregnancy condition, Postnatal Massage helps the mother in many ways:

• Physically, as the body is usually raw and tender after the strenuous exertion of labor, it can also aid the healing of a caesarean section birth.

• Emotionally, as the new mother is adjusting to the challenge of motherhood and the arrival of a new family member.

• By eliminating toxins released during labour.

• By easing muscle aches and pains that result from nursing and carrying the newborn.

• By balancing energy levels, and relieving emotional and physical stress.

• By calming the nervous system, producing a renewed sense of body image and self-esteem.

Pregnancy Massage

During pregnancy, massage can safely, comfortably and effectively relieve stress and discomfort and, historically, touch and massage were a central component of maternity care across all cultures. This hands-on approach to caring for women during pregnancy and childbirth is just as valid today as it is easy to implement, and very complementary to any medical considerations and required treatments.

Pregnant women can suffer from all sorts of ailments, including heartburn, backaches, swollen ankles, aching muscles, breast soreness and fatigue. Standard medicine offers few means of alleviating these problems. Women may also feel increased stress due to the psychological effects of pregnancy, which include changes in body image, concerns about the baby’s health and the challenges associated with this life-changing event.

Through simple techniques, including the nerve stroke, effleurage, petri sage, friction and tapotement most of these symptoms can be alleviated. You will learn how massage can relieve tension during pregnancy, help prepare for labour and make the postpartum period less difficult.

Aromatherapy Massage

The healing power of particular essential oils is the main attraction of Aromatherapy Massage.

Aromatherapy uses warm essential oils to activate your sense of smell and increase your feeling of well-being. The oils are most commonly massaged into the skin, dropped into bathing water, and used in diffusers to disseminate the smell.

The essential oils used in Aromatherapy Massage are powerful and are extracted from plants, shrubs, flowers, bark, peel, resin, grasses, fruits, roots, trees, petals, stems or seeds. Only a small amount of essential oil is needed, blended with a larger amount of “carrier” oil which provides certain benefits of its own and acts as a balancing and stabilizing agent.

Foot Reflexology

Millions of people worldwide regularly have foot reflexology sessions to contribute to their internal health believing that specific areas of the foot correspond to specific organs, bones and body systems. Through stimulation of the circulatory and lymphatic systems, and by encouraging the release of toxins, reflexology prompts the body to heal itself. It is also an extremely effective therapy for stress, tension and tiredness.

Reflexology teaches that a vital energy or life force circulates between the organs of the body, permeating every living cell and tissue. If this energy becomes blocked, the part of the body relating to the blockage is adversely affected. Energy blocks in the human body are reflected in the hands and feet in one or more of the zones located there. By using particular pressure techniques, the affected areas can be detected through the experience of pain or through the presence of gritty areas, often referred to as crystal deposits, in the relevant part of the foot or hand. The pressure and massage techniques taught in reflexology are designed to dissipate these energy blocks and break down crystalline structure.

Traditional Creambath Hair Treatment

Regular use of creambath hair treatments to hydrate and nourish their locks has contributed to the reputation of Indonesian women having lustrous hair. An extremely popular pampering treatment for both men and women, the Indonesian creambath involves gently massaging the cream over the entire hair and scalp, then warming or steaming the client’s head to encourage blood circulation while opening the hair roots to absorb the wonderful properties of the applied cream. At the same time clients are treated to a relaxing massage of their neck, shoulders, arms and hands.

The traditional hair creambath methodology uses fresh, organic ingredients such as avocado, coconut milk, carrot, lime and fresh mint leaf.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara is an ancient Ayurveda healing practice, performed in India for over 2,000 years, involving the application of warmed sesame oil which is infused with herbs that are gently poured onto the forehead for an extended period.

Traditionally it is used to calm and restore the nerves, harmonize vata constitutions, release stored emotions and purify the mind. In Ayurveda medicine it is considered an important tool in the pursuit of higher states of consciousness. Shirodhara has been shown to help with fatigue, mental exhaustion, anxiety, insomnia, some mental disorders, headache, excessive thinking, nervousness, and many other conditions commonly suffered  as a result of today’s super-active and stressful lifestyle.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage, or “therapeutic massage”, currently represents the Western standard for massage therapy. It is a general massage system that focuses on increasing circulation and promoting relaxation. Based on a Western approach to anatomy and physiology – rather than the predominant focus of Asian massage techniques on flow of energy within the body – Swedish massage incorporates five types of basic stroke: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement and vibration.

Swedish massage is an expected modality for most spas around the world.
